TITLE: Entrepreneurs and Deregulation
White Paper
This paper is a part of a series that examines the impact of deregulation of the electrical utility industry on startup
companies in USA.  There are many objectives of deregulation, as stated below, however startup companies conducting
business in the industry is rarely one of the main concerns when addressing these issues.  This paper will look at how
deregulation impacts the startup companies in the industry. These are not new utility companies, rather companies that
provide services to the major players of the utility industry. Examples of these companies are software programmers,
internet services, remote control services such as smart house enabling, real estate firms, etc.  Included in the survey are
200 such companies, who all were asked questions related to the deregulation, and to entrepreneurship.   The results are
presented in such a way that one can see what the typical startup considers important factors, and also if there are
statistical significant differences of companies located in deregulated states versus companies located in regulated states.
One major finding is that companies in deregulated states has seen business increase with 66% as a consequence of
deregulation, while businesses in regulated states has only seen a 27% increase in business from deregulation.

TITLE: Innovation in the Energy Industry; Country Challenges, Solutions, and Models
White Paper
ABSTRACT
This paper discusses innovation in the energy industry at country levels.  Global Energy Hub specializes in startups in the
energy industry, and this paper will how the innovation process in countries or areas can be improved to better facilitate
economic growth through startups in the energy sector.  Governments are responsible for laying the fundament of the
innovation policy in their country.  However, there is often a lack of targeted policy for small new companies in the energy
sector, as majority of policies and focus is on universities and research institutions, both often publicly funded, and utility
companies, which also has some interest to the public sector through ownership, security, and other issues.  Today, a
larger quantity of research and innovation is conducted by small and medium sized companies, who are thriving as a result
of high energy prices.  This paper presents suggestions how an area’s innovation policy should be conducted, based on
traditional theory and input from startup companies based upon results from a recent survey.

White Paper
ABSTRACT

sources of power, the less power will be sent on the large power lines to reach the customer.  Therefore, theoretically in the
future there should be less children living close to power lines diagnosed with leukemia as the world sees increased use
of renewable distributed energy sources and less use of high voltage power lines.
of renewable distributed energy sources and less use of high voltage power lines.

This paper will first re-visit some of the case studies that have researched the issue of consequences of living close to high
voltage power lines.  Second, this paper will look at the number of people this possibly impacts.  Third, there will be a few
remarks on how the government and private sectors spending on alternative energy sources and might reduce the need for
high voltage power lines.
