“In an era of major climate change and an increasing
need for clean energy, we are proud to be presenting a
renewable energy source which has never been
harnessed until now. We are also most grateful that the
Crown Princess wishes to lend her support to this
milestone in our development of osmotic power”, says
Statkraft CEO, Bård Mikkelsen.
The prototype that will be opened at Tofte on 24
November has been in development for more than a
year. The plant will have a limited production capacity
and is intended primarily for testing and development
purposes. The aim is to be capable of constructing a
commercial osmotic power plant within a few years’ time.
The global potential of osmotic power is estimated to be
1,600-1,700 TWh per annum, equivalent to 50 percent
of the EU’s total power production. Osmotic power plants
can, in principle, be located wherever fresh water runs
into the sea; they produce no noise or polluting
emissions and they can be integrated into existing
industrial zones, for example, in the basements of
industrial buildings.
Statkraft has been researching osmotic power since
1997 and has developed this prototype in cooperation
with R&D organisations from many countries.

Aora's solar tower has been erected in the Arava desert
in Israel. The 30m tower stands in adjoining a field of
mirrors on 0.5acre (2,000sq.m.) of land at Kibbutz
Samar, outside Eilat.
This unit forms a single power module, capable of
generating 100kW electric power in addition to 170kW of
thermal power.

Innowattech presents a pioneering invention for
Parasitic Energy harvesting. They provide genuine
environmental benefits where parasitic mechanical
energy on roads, highways, railways and airport
runaways, are harvested and transferred back, in a
process by which the energy is captured, stored and
reused.
The system is based on piezoelectric generators; the
piezoelectric effect converts mechanical strain into
electrical current or voltage. The constitutive relations
for piezoelectric materials are based on the assumption
that the total strain in the actuator is the sum of the
mechanical strain induced by the stress; the thermal
strain caused by temperature integrated in the
piezoelectric effect, and the controllable actuation strain
caused by the electric voltage.
Piezoelectric generators with various dimensions, from a
few centimeters to large surfaces, are investigated,
developed and demonstrated. The generators are
embedded between the superstructure layers, and
usually supposed to be covered with an asphalt topping
layer. The generators are mounted with electronic cards
supplying the storage system. Assimilation of the
present system, generators and electronic cards, is
planned to be performed during paving of new roads or
in the course of the maintenance work.
It is the first company to demonstrate a green alternative
for electricity production up to industrial size. The
parasitic energy of busy roads, railroads and runways
near population centers can be converted into electrical
energy that can be supplied back to the customers
either by light or back into the national electric grid.
Estimation shows a potential of about hundreds till
thousand kilowatts per hour.

The SunCatcher™ is a proprietary solar-to-grid-quality
electricity generation technology. It is a 25-kilowatt-
electric (kWe) solar dish Stirling system that is designed
to automatically track the sun so as to collect and focus
solar energy on to a power conversion unit (PCU), which
generates electricity. The system consists of a solar
concentrator in a dish structure that supports an array of
curved glass mirror facets. These mirrors collect and
concentrate solar energy into grid-quality electricity. The
conversion process in the PCU involves a closed-loop,
high-efficiency four-cylinder reciprocating Solar Stirling
Engine, using an internal working fluid that is recycled
through the engine. The PCU solar receiver is an
external heat exchanger that absorbs the incoming solar
thermal energy. This heats and pressurizes the internal
working fluid in the heat exchanger tubing and this
pressurized gas in turn powers the Solar Stirling Engine.

Wood-pellets are a clean, co2-neutral and convenient
fuel, mostly produced from sawdust and wood shaving,
compressed under high pressure using no glue or
additives. As a higly standardised and compressed fuel,
pellets allow cost-efficient transportation of fuel and
automatic operation of plants for heat and electricity
production, from one-family homes to large-scale power
plants.

Design and manufacture the solar thermal modules for
the Solar Islands project.
Nolaris' patented technology is the circular Solar Islands
with a diameter of 5 kilometers and a height of 20
meters. It consists of a torus, which is the steam storage,
carrying the termosolar panels placed on a membrane.
Electric pumps constitute an overpressure of 0.1 bar to
sustain the membrane 20 meters above the water level.
Nolaris claimed the whole platform adjusts its position to
the course of the sun, to assure a maximum yield rate.
To enable the platform to move, electric hydrodynamic
motors will be fixed every 10 meters along the
circumference.
The construction of the first prototype of a Solar Island
in the Emirates will remain with CSEM. A Nolaris-UAE
subsidiary will soon be established in the United Arab
Emirates in order to ensure the manufacturing of solar
panels with an exclusive manufacturing license covering
the geographical zone of the Near and Middle East.
Located in Neuchatel, Switzerland, the startup currently
employs four people.

Hydrogen Power Inc. (OTCBB: HYDP) is a Seattle-based
alternative energy company that has developed a
proprietary method of producing hydrogen called
Hydrogen Now™. This patented process safely
generates pure hydrogen using aluminum, one of the
most abundant natural resources on earth. Hydrogen
Now™ combines aluminum, water and an
environmentally friendly catalyst to create a water-split
reaction, generating hydrogen on-site and on-demand.
Although there are many different ways to produce
hydrogen including natural gas steam reformation (over
96% of current hydrogen production), and electrolysis
(using electricity generated from nuclear, solar, wind,
biomass and coal energy), these methods are not easily
mobile, on-demand or on-board. These methods also
do not overcome the infrastructure hurdles.
The simplicity of HPI’s Hydrogen Now™ technology
allows for the production of hydrogen where needed and
when needed without connection to the electrical grid or
other energy sources. Hydrogen Now™ offers a solution
to hydrogen production that addresses the critical
infrastructure issues of production, storage, and
transportation.

Leveraging recent science advances in nanostructured
materials, Nanosolar has developed proprietary high-
yield high-throughput thin-film process technology
based on the economics of printing (non-vacuum /
solution coating). For the first time, this makes it
possible to simply print solar cells that are efficient and
durable, and fundamentally change the cost efficiency
and volume availability of solar electricity.
Nanosolar took the most efficient and most durable thin-
film device technology, called CIGS (Copper Indium
Gallium Diselenide), and innovated on the entire array
of process-technology attributes that drive yield,
materials utilization, and production throughput – to
reach the breakthrough promise of thin-film solar cells.

Oilseed R&D differentiates Blue Sun from other
producers in the biodiesel industry
Blue Sun's agriculture research and development plan is
focused on developing low-cost oilseed crops that are
well-adapted to the hot, arid growing conditions of the
High Plains. Blue Sun estimates that these new types of
oilseed crops - our R&D includes dryland mustard, false
flax, canola, and rapeseed varieties - can reduce
production costs of biodiesel feedstock by 40%. This is
crucial since the cost of feedstock (usually made from
more expensive soybean oils) represents 75% of the
total cost of biodiesel fuels. The social, economic and
environmental benefits of biodiesel will not be realized
until the price is competitive with petroleum diesel. Thus
the Blue Sun strategy represents a significant
opportunity to increase biodiesel use in North America.
